Everyone can join us in a Virtual 5k for Cancer Research!
Complete at your own pace during the month of July, 2020
Kingsgate Skating Club and Sno-King Ice Arena Kirkland are excited to once again join forces with the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation through Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer™ in the fight against cancer. Many of our skaters and their family members have been impacted by cancer including coach and Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer™ Host Maria Murphy.
We're coming together as a community to raise awareness and funds for cancer research! Proceeds will benefit the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation and Seattle Children's!
To keep our supporters safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, our fundraising events from Napa to Tampa were canceled and our ability to raise critical funds for cancer research was impacted. Your support today will help us stand in the gap and continue to advance survivorship and quality of life for cancer patients everywhere.
3) Grow our community by asking your family and friends to sign up with you or donate to your page. Post about our shared cause and invite others to join you on social media!
4) Complete your 5k at your own pace during the month of July. You can bike, walk, run, blade, swim, go solo or in a group - any way you'd like to complete your 5k! Mark your progress on your page so your supporters can cheer you on!
5) The Top 2 fundraisers as of August 1, 2020 at 9am EDT will have an opportunity to interview Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton via Zoom!
A portion of the net proceeds from this event will stay local and support our Charity of Choice, the Ben Towne Center for Cancer Research at Seattle Children's.
"The Ben Towne Center doesn't just have a vision of curing childhood cancer - we have a plan. Our world-class researchers are spearheading a treatment, called immunotherapy, that uses the body's immune system to eliminate cancer, without chemotherapy or radiation. This cure starts by taking T cells - specialized white blood cells that wipe out infections - from a patient's own blood. Then we re-engineer these cells, installing new genetic instructions and new receptors that enable these cells to recognize specific types of tumor cells. The modified cells are then put back into the patient, where they find and destroy the cancer. Clinical studies have shown this approach to be more targeted and more effective than traditional therapies, without their devastating side effects. The Ben Towne Center is translating this success into treatments that save children.
Our researchers have started the first round of clinical trials exploring this potential cure, a key step toward finalizing therapies that can be used worldwide. Within 20 years, the destructive toll of traditional cancer treatments could be a thing of the past."
